Our Strategy

Our goal is to acquire a healthy, established company (see Investment Criteria) and to increase its value using proven management techniques that entail pursuing both internal and external growth opportunities. This includes among others product/service innovations, geographic and vertical market expansion, strategic alliances, and add-on acquisitions. Our preference is to take outright ownership or a controlling stake in our acquisition. We are unlikely to consider turnaround or startup opportunities.

Abacus Partners is particularly interested in investment opportunities where the current owner is considering retirement or where there is a need to add external senior executives to grow the business. We focus on opportunities where the collective talents of our team can be applied to maximise the long-term value of the business. We actively pursue both owner operated companies and non-core divisions being divested by corporate parent organisations.

A key part of our strategy is to have a full-time active management role in the company we acquire. As owner-operators, we can concentrate on generating long-term value for employees, customers, investors and the community. For retiring owners, our active participation provides an option for them to realise the value of their ownership in the company and still maintain the business as a going concern for its most prized constituencies, namely its employees, customers and suppliers. This new management team will have the benefit of drawing on the extensive experience of the Abacus Partners' syndicate of investors (see Management Team), all of whom are proven business leaders.

Investment opportunities are gathered from traditional intermediaries, our extensive advisory network, and through proprietary sources. Although our investment evaluation systems follow traditional private equity practices, we also consider a candidate’s fit with our management-centric and growth-oriented investment philosophy. Size, market position, current management, ownership positions, ongoing operating strategy and growth potential are all evaluated to determine whether we are the right partners to facilitate the acquisition candidate’s transition.
